Artifact Description
During student teaching at Rantoul Township High School, I attended weekly Professional Learning Community meetings. This artifact is a copy of handouts and notes from the PLC meeting. During these meetings, I met with all the teachers in the mathematics department as they discussed and planned lessons for next year with the incorporation of the common core standards. Further more I collaborated with the Algebra I teachers to plan upcoming chapter tests and units.
Satisfying the Standard (8B, 8C ,8K)
Within the mathematics department at Rantoul, there are seven Mathematics teachers and two Special Education teachers. During the PLC meetings, the math teachers discuss about the logistics as a whole department, then split up into smaller teams to plan chapter tests and schedules for the unit. Each month, a professor from the University of Illinois, Kathleen Smith, comes to consult with the math department in discussing about ways to incorporate the Common Core State Standards into the math curriculum. At these meetings, I have learned about the collaborative process and the skills necessary to initiate and carry out the processes. Since I teach two Algebra I classes, I participate in the small team meetings with three other math teachers who also teach Algebra I. In these sessions, we plan the schedule for the unit, deciding how many days to teach a particular topic and when the chapter test will be. Furthermore, we discuss about what types of problems to add to the chapter test and ask for each other's input. By planning with the math teachers, I demonstrate my understanding of collaborating with others in the use of data to design and implement effective school interventions that benefit all students. We implement effective school interventions through planning the unit schedules and deciding how to make the unit cohesive even when different teachers are teaching the same topic. Through these PLC meetings, I participate in collaborative decision-making and problem-solving with colleagues to achieve success for all students.
Professional Development
I recognize that teaching is a community effort. This includes working with colleagues, students, parents or guardians, and community members. As a teacher, my goal is to be a team player and to work professionally with colleagues to promote student learning. Just as it is important to stand up for my beliefs and values of teaching, I also believe it is important to be open and listen to others' viewpoints. By doing so, I plan to work with other teachers meaningfully, share my ideas, and also listen to opposing ideas to ultimately reach a happy medium with the students' futures at heart.
